Pope Francis had a good sampling of Filipino food—not to mention hospitality—on his way back to Rome.
Flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) served the Pontiff two meals and snacks for the 14-hour flight to the Italian capital.
Crew members said Pope Francis was initially served arroz caldo (rice porridge with chicken bits) for snacks but said he wanted to try dinuguan (pork blood stew) with buttered puto (steamed rice cake) after being told how it was prepared. They said he liked it so much that he finished the entire serving.
The Pope preferred seafood for his entrée. Lunch was Grilled Scallops with Fresh Spring Rolls and dinner was Gambas Ajillo on Quinoa Salad
Known for his sweet tooth, the Pontiff reportedly enjoyed two flavors of Carmen’s Best ice cream—Brown Butter Almond Brittle and Malted Milk. He also indulged in some crisps, a bag each of Dorito’s Nacho Cheesier tortilla chips and Oishi Natural Sea Salt potato chips.
For giveaways, PAL gave the passengers chocolate-dipped dried mango from Cebu Best and crisp shortbread cookies from Shorts Gourmet.
PAL will also save as souvenirs the pillow Pope Francis used to rest while on his flight back to Italy as well a zucchetto(skullcap).
