MyStory: A Mormon covers the Sinulog and writes about religious co-existence

The Philippines has always been heralded as the cradle of Catholicism in Asia. Walk around and you’ll meet children named Niño, Jesus, Mary and Magdalene.

A ride on a jeepney will offer a peek into this deep Catholicism – often you will see a miniature Santo Niño mounted on the dashboard, a rosary wound on the steering wheel or hanging from the rear-view mirror.

Catholic Church heritage

Most of the Philippine heritage sites are even Catholic churches, hinting on the strong presence of Catholicism in the country.

And here comes us, the non-Catholics. We number less than 20 percent of the population, according to a 2013 SWS survey. We do not get as many holidays as Catholics do. But the best thing is that we co-exist nicely with them.

As a Mormon, I’ve often been teased on why we give importance to giving tithes or why we don’t make the sign of the cross and down to the more weird ones like why David Archuleta is in our church. I don’t take those jokes seriously as there are more people who understand us and respect our belief.

Also out of curiosity, I propelled myself to the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino to attend a novena mass. It wasn’t an easy feat going there, it was raining so hard, there were almost zero jeepneys available, and I had to walk and brave the heavy downpour.

I have always heard naysayers exclaiming that most Catholics don’t take their church seriously as they do not bring Bibles and hardly observe the dress code.

But they’re wrong.

Devotees light candles in prayer at the basilica. (USJR MassCom intern Nel Mozol)

Deep belief

In there was a sea of people not minding the heavy rain just to attend the mass. Not serious? A lot of people cried while singing the Gozos. Not counting those people who were weeping and shaking while lighting the small candles, praying, and asking for guidance from the Lord God.

The dress code violation was half true, but mostly violating it were foreigners. It is worth noting that despite looking “manang” by modern standards, a lot of mothers, including their daughters, preferred to wear skirts that reach below the knee.

Good thing the Basilica also provides umbrellas to keep churchgoers from getting wet.

The priest’s homily was centered on the penance of sins. In this modern time, where we casually commit sin without knowing it, the homily served as reminder that we should be more mindful and please the Lord with all the good things that we do.

Common thread among religions

The homily talked about the same subject common in many religions –praising the Lord and avoiding sin.

What totally stood out for me is the variety of the churchgoers. There were students in uniform, LGBTs, old women, and the entire sort of people you come across on any given day.

It is amazing how despite their differences, they were brought together in the same place, at the same time, not minding the environmental conditions for one cause – that is praising the Lord God.

My whole experience taught me one thing – co-existence. The world is wonderful. It is just too sad that we are divided by our beliefs, traditions, religions and views.

It is so sad that we are creating an invisible barrier among ourselves, that blinds us to what could be.

The world is amazing. Wouldn’t it be more amazing, however, if we choose to share it peacefully with the rest of humankind, regardless of religion?

PREFICE OF THE MASS FOR STO. NINO A LESSON ON HISTORY HOW THE PHILIPPINES BECAME A CHRISTIAN NATION BY Luigi Flores

sto nino

The Preface of the Santo Nino used at the Basilica in Cebu is more of a lesson in History, of how the Philippines became a Christian nation. I still shiver in fear and awe at how we became Christian:

The great crowd at the Holy Mass outside the Basilica of the Sto Nino in Cebu City

The great crowd at the Holy Mass outside the Basilica of the Sto Nino in Cebu City

Father, all-powerful and ever-living God, we do well always and everywhere to give you thanks.
For through the image of Senor Santo Nino, in pilgrimage across the oceans, your Name came to be known among our people.
You have chosen these islands as lighthouse of faith, to the countries of the east.
You were present at that first Mass, where your Son, Victim and Priest, consecrated our soil.
And from Him flowed the grace of that first Baptism, which made us a Christian nation.
And so we praise you as our people have done throughout the centuries, and we will always do as long as there is time.
And we join the angels and the saints, in proclaiming your glory in an unending hymn of praise.

LOL

Ang sabi po ng Biblia. .

Matthew 22:39

39 And the second is like to this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”

Sabi pa ni Saint Peter. .

1 Peter 2:17

“17 Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.”

PASUGO Magazine, July – August 1988 pp. 6.

“Even secular history shows a direct time link between the Catholic Church and the Apostles, leading to the conclusion that the true Church of Christ is the Catholic Church.”

“19 Going therefore, teach ye ALL NATIONS: baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost”

WHO CREATED ADAM AND EVE, GOD OR HIS SON JESUS CHRIST?

Then God said: "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and the cattle, and over all the wild animals and all the creatures that crawl on the ground." God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them. (Gen 1:26-27, NAB)

Then God said: “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and the cattle, and over all the wild animals and all the creatures that crawl on the ground.” God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them. (Gen 1:26-27, NAB)

GOD CREATED ALL THINGS THROUGH HIS SON JESUS CHRIST

The testimony of the Bible repeatedly affirms that all things were created by God through His Son Jesus Christ:

  • He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For in him were created all things in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things were created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.  (Col 1:15-17, New American Bible)
  • In the beginning [before all time] was the Word (Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself. He was present originally with God. All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him was not even one thing made that has come into being.  (Jn 1:1-3, Amplified Bible)
  • He (Jesus Christ) came into the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him [did not know Him]. (Jn 1:10, AMP, emphasis mine)
  • In times past, God spoke in partial and various ways to our ancestors through the prophets; in these last days, he spoke to us through a son, whom he made heir of all things and through whom he created the universe, who is the refulgence of his glory, the very imprint of his being, and who sustains all things by his mighty word. (Heb 1:1-3a, NAB)
  • Yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom all things are and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things are and through whom we exist. (1Cor 8:6, NAB)

IF GOD CREATED ALL THINGS THROUGH HIS SON JESUS CHRIST, THEN THE ACTUAL CREATOR IS HIS SON JESUS CHRIST

The truthfulness of that fact is corroborated by this testimony of God:

  • For to which of the angels did God ever say: “You are my son; this day I have begotten you”? Or again: “I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me”? And again, when he leads the first-born into the world, he says: “Let all the angels of God worship him.”  Of the angels he says: “He makes his angels winds and his ministers a fiery flame”; but of the Son: “Your throne, O God (O Son), stands forever and ever; and a righteous scepter is the scepter of your kingdom.  You loved justice and hated wickedness; therefore God (therefore Son), your God (your Father), anointed you (made you Christ) with the oil of gladness above your companions”; and: “At the beginning, O Lord (O Son), you established the earth, and the heavens are the works of your hands.  They will perish, but you remain; and they will all grow old like a garment.  You will roll them up like a cloak, and like a garment they will be changed.  But you are the same, and your years will have no end.”  (Heb 1:5-12, NAB, emphasis mine)

The testimony of God is far greater than any human testimony:

  • If we accept human testimony, the testimony of God is surely greater. Now the testimony of God is this, that he has testified on behalf of his Son. Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony within himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar by not believing the testimony God has given about his Son. And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.  Whoever possesses the Son has life; whoever does not possess the Son of God does not have life.  (1Jn 5:9-12, NAB)

In Hebrews 1:5-12, the testimony of God was that His Son is God, Christ, and Lord who created the heavens and the earth.  In 1John 5:9-12, the testimony of God was that His Son is the eternal life.  In the verse below, the testimony of John was that Jesus Christ is the true God and eternal life:

  • We also know that the Son of God has come and has given us discernment to know the one who is true. And we are in the one who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. (1Jn 5:20, NAB)

This testimony of Jesus Christ confirms He is the resurrection and the life:

  • Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.” (Jn 11:25-27, NAB)

Moving on, the testimony of the Bible confirms that Jesus Christ is the Creator.

  • The author of life you put to death, but God raised him from the dead; of this we are witnesses. (Acts 3:15, NAB)

Jesus Christ is the faithful and true witness, the source of God’s creation:

  • “To the angel of the church in Laodicea, write this:” ‘The Amen, the faithful and true witness, the source of God’s creation, says this:’ (Rv 3:14, NAB)
  • Then I saw the heavens opened, and there was a white horse; its rider was (called) “Faithful and True.” He judges and wages war in righteousness. His eyes were (like) a fiery flame, and on his head were many diadems. He had a name inscribed that no one knows except himself.  He wore a cloak that had been dipped in blood, and his name was called the Word of God.  (Rv 19:11-13, NAB)

Thus, if the testimony of God is this:

  • And: “At the beginning, O Lord (O Son), you established the earth, and the heavens are the works of your hands. They will perish, but you remain; and they will all grow old like a garment. You will roll them up like a cloak, and like a garment they will be changed.  But you are the same, and your years will have no end.”  (Heb 1:10-12, NAB, emphasis mine)

Then the One speaking in the following passages is the preexistence of Jesus Christ:

  • Thus says the LORD, your redeemer, who formed you from the womb: I am the LORD, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens; when I spread out the earth, who was with me? (Isa 44:24, NAB)
  • Yes, my hand laid the foundations of the earth; my right hand spread out the heavens. When I call them, they stand forth at once. (Isa 48:13, NAB)
  • And forget the LORD, your maker, who stretched out the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth? All the day you are in constant dread of the fury of the oppressor; But when he sets himself to destroy, what is there of the oppressor’s fury? (Isa 51:13, NAB)
  • I have put my words into your mouth and shielded you in the shadow of my hand, I, who stretched out the heavens, who laid the foundations of the earth, who say to Zion: You are my people. (Isa 51:16, NAB)
  • Then God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered into a single basin, so that the dry land may appear.” And so it happened: the water under the sky was gathered into its basin, and the dry land appeared. God called the dry land “the earth,” and the basin of the water he called “the sea.” God saw how good it was. Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth vegetation: every kind of plant that bears seed and every kind of fruit tree on earth that bears fruit with its seed in it.” And so it happened: the earth brought forth every kind of plant that bears seed and every kind of fruit tree on earth that bears fruit with its seed in it. God saw how good it was.  Evening came, and morning followed–the third day.  Then God said: “Let there be lights in the dome of the sky, to separate day from night. Let them mark the fixed times, the days and the years, and serve as luminaries in the dome of the sky, to shed light upon the earth.” And so it happened: God made the two great lights, the greater one to govern the day, and the lesser one to govern the night; and he made the stars.  God set them in the dome of the sky, to shed light upon the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. God saw how good it was.  Evening came, and morning followed–the fourth day.  (Gen 1:9-19, NAB)

If the preexistence of Jesus Christ was not the Creator of all things, then God would be lying in what He said in Hebrews 1:10-12.  But since God does not lie, then truly Jesus Christ was the Creator of all things as declared by God in this wise:

  • And: “At the beginning, O Lord (O Son), you established the earth, and the heavens are the works of your hands. They will perish, but you remain; and they will all grow old like a garment. You will roll them up like a cloak, and like a garment they will be changed.  But you are the same, and your years will have no end.”  (Heb 1:10-12, NAB, emphasis mine)
  • In the hope of eternal life that God, who does not lie, promised before time began, (Ti 1:2, NAB)

ON THE SIXTH DAY THE PREEXISTENCE OF JESUS CHRIST CREATED ADAM AND EVE

  • Then God said: “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and the cattle, and over all the wild animals and all the creatures that crawl on the ground.” God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them.  (Gen 1:26-27, NAB)

HERE ARE SOME IRREFUTABLE PROOFS THAT THE PREEXISTENCE OF JESUS CHRIST CREATED ADAM AND EVE

  1. As discussed and proven earlier, the actual Creator of all things was the preexistence of Jesus Christ. He created all things in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, that is, the men (which includes Adam and Eve) and the angels (cf Col 1:15-17).
  2. Of the three Spirits or Persons of God, only the preexistence of Jesus Christ was called the “Word” who was God and through whom all things were created (cf Jn 1:1-3). He is called the “Word” because He is the voice of God, the verbalizer of God’s word, and He is also known as the “Word of God (cf Rv 19:13)” and the “Word of life (1Jn 1:1)”. Thus, it was the preexistence of Jesus Christ who was communicating with God the Father who was in heaven and said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness (Gen 1:26a).”
  3. If the direct Creator of Adam and Eve was God the Father alone, and not through the preexistence of Jesus Christ, then why does He have to verbalize His intention of making man as if asking for clearance or approval from someone greater than Him?

Jesus said, “The Father is greater than I (cf Jn 14:28).”

Thus, if the Father is greater than Jesus Christ, then the one verbalizing His intention of making man as if asking for clearance or approval from someone greater than Him is none other than Jesus Christ who said to the Father:

  • “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness (Gen 1:26a).”
  1. Moreover, if it was God the Father who said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness (Gen 1:26a),” then how can that be possible because God the Father is Spirit and invisible while man has a body and visible:
  • “God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth.” (Jn 4:24, NAB)

According to Jesus Christ when He became a man, a spirit or a ghost has no body:

  • “Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” (Lk 24:39, NAB)

When the preexistence of Jesus Christ became a man, He became the visible image of the invisible God:

  • He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. (Col 1:15, NAB)

Therefore, it was the preexistence of Jesus Christ who said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness (Gen 1:26a),” because He is the future visible image of the invisible God when the time was ripe for Him to be made of Mary and become a man with a visible body:

  • But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, (Gal 4:4, King James Version)

WHAT IS THE PREEXISTENCE OF JESUS CHRIST?

Being the Word who was God and who is Spirit (Jn 1:1-3, 4:24), the preexistence of Jesus Christ is Spirit.

It was the Spirit of Jesus Christ within the prophets of old who testified in them His future sufferings and resulting glories:

  • Although you have not seen him you love him; even though you do not see him now yet believe in him, you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, as you attain the goal of (your) faith, the salvation of your souls. Concerning this salvation, prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and investigated it, investigating the time and circumstances that the Spirit of Christ within them indicated when it testified in advance to the sufferings destined for Christ and the glories to follow them. (1Pt 1:8-11, NAB)

It is the same Spirit of Jesus Christ that dwells in us who belongs to Him and gives us life:

  • But you are not in the flesh; on the contrary, you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you. Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is alive because of righteousness. If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit that dwells in you.  (Rom 8:9-11, NAB)

Therefore, it was the Spirit of Jesus Christ, that is, the preexistence of Jesus Christ, who created Adam and Eve and all things!

But never forget this declaration of the Lord God Jesus Christ:

  • “The Father and I are one.” (Jn 10:30, NAB)

DISCOVER THE SATANIC SUBLIMINAL IMAGES IN JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES CULT ART By Aloysius Kayiwa

Dear Catholics,

Jehovah’s Witnesses Watch Tower literature distributed to you is satanic and full of subliminal images. You do not need to accept their magazines and books even though they are free. This is an alien issue to many but Watch Tower art is full of satanism, occult and witchcraft. Sadly,Jehovah’s Witnesses themselves are not aware about this and are connected to subliminal messages without their knowledge. I will show a fraction of the Subliminal art from Watch Tower publications. As i said in my last blog about Dante’s Pope Francis painting, you can always to agree or disagree but the question is; why are those images there? Art appreciation is objective.

Let us start;

wtThe image above is from “You Can Live Forever in Paradise on Earth” page 244. Pretty good image to you? But wait a minute, there is satanism in there.The husband is not looking at the wife but something else. Look here;

10933790_10202343934358976_7479187133733388361_nYou see where the circle is?The man is staring at the ram. the Watch Tower not only depicted the horoscope sign of Aries besides the woman but also directed the husbands eyes to the satanic hidden image.Look at his clenched fist!! The intention is to connect you to the occultist horoscopes. Is it really usual for families to have such a potrait in their homes?

The Aries zodiac sign found in horoscopes

The Aries zodiac sign found in horoscopes

For your information,  the ram is a symbol which represented the Egyptian god “Amun”. In some circles of Satanism, Amun represents Satan himself. Amun is a ram-headed god. This deity was part of the pantheon of Egyptian gods in the time when Moses led the people of Israel from Egypt.The images of Amun, hidden in the Jehovah’s Witnesses’s magazines are part of a satanic (and secret) cult. The main leaders of the Watchtower are involved in that cult.

Here is a detailed one;

perrrriiiiSee how the Watch Tower connects their followers to subliminal imagery. Let us see another one;

WT (2)The above image shows Jesus healing the sick. It appears in the WTS book “The Knowledge That Leads to Everlasting Life”  page 35. How shall we know its satanic? It is a demonic image. When combined, the hidden demonic image comes out;

Here is the demonic image hidden in;

Now that is not enough.Look at the vegetation above, there are two more strange images;

Very cruel indeed! There is another demonic image in there.When you use a mirror, this is what comes out;

aamun

Amun again!! Why is this image popular in Watch Tower art? This image appears in the Watch Tower magazine of January 1997 page 15 about creation. Many animals of the world are included in this image but the ram is placed in the middle. Is it by accident? Not really, it is intentional. The ram representing Amun is used in high magic and represents Satan himself.

The Watch Tower Society is a satanic cult involved in occult and witchcraft.

Another satanic image taken from the Watch Tower book “Worship the only true God” page 123.

headMillions of the great crowd unitedly worship the true God! really? or they are worshiping Satan? See;

headYou thought it was a rugged glacier? Even the boy in a hat on the botton right corner is showing us that they are worshiping satan.Look at the boys arm?

Proof,want more proof? Look at this image from the book “You can Live forever on paradise earth” page 128;

CaptureFor many this image has no problem.However when we focus at the back of the chair in front of the people we see a hidden symbol;

Capture2What are we seeing? A masonic symbol!!It is an occult symbol also known as a pentagram.Then look at this image from the first edition of the Watch Tower book “APOCALYPSE!: It’s Grand Climax at hand!” page 52.

subliminalI guess you see no problem with it.But look at the occult in it;

subliminalYou can now clearly see a demonic hand trying touching the scepter! Here is a closer look;

APOCALIPSIS_52_GARRA_3

The above are some of the satanic and occult images imbedded in Watch Tower literature. The WTS and Jehovah’s Witnesses are always lambasting the Catholic Church of paganism but now we can see that they are the pagan and Satan worshipers. The Watch Tower Society is a cult engaged in sorcery, occult, spiritualism and witchcraft yet it claims it is God’s true Organization.Note that professional artists are involved in this “evil art”,  and are obviously are aware of what they are doing. These images hidden with in Watch Tower art are not mere accidents but the Watch Tower is a satanic cult that should be avoided by everyone.

Share this brothers and sisters and pray for me.Thank you!

7 Myths About Spanish Colonial Period Filipinos Should All Stop Believing

Was Spanish rule of the Philippines really that bad? Did their 300-plus year occupation of the country consist of nothing but abusing and exploiting the Filipinos for their own dastardly ends?

While it’s easy to answer yes to that question, the truth is a lot more complex. While wrongdoings did happen, the Spanish weren’t exactly pure evil. Our perception of them only turned out that way due to the massive propaganda campaign conducted by Filipino nationalists and later on by America.

Although this list won’t condone the abuses committed by the Spanish, it will go through some of the common myths Filipinos over the years have come to believe about Spanish rule in the Philippines.

1. The Friars Did Nothing But Oppress The People.

Spanish friars abuses in the Philippines

Probably one of the most widely-used images to depict the Spanish excesses in the Philippines is that of the lecherous, self-righteous friar.

While it is true that there were indeed friars who abused their positions, we must not also forget the numerous good things friars did for the country. To name a few, they helped build bridges, hospitals, schools and other buildings, many of which we can still see even today.

Notwithstanding the negative stereotypes, a number of good friars also actually protected the Filipinos from exploitation and abuse. Among them were Domingo de Salazar, the first bishop of Manila who campaigned for the abolition of slavery and just compensation for indentured Filipinos during the 1582 Manila Synod; Friar Martin de Rada who complained to the Mexican viceroy about the abusive behavior of the conquistadors; and Friar Diego de Herrera who protested the encomienda system.

Unfortunately, for all their good deeds, the friars—as one of the most visible Spaniards on the archipelago—provided Filipino nationalists and propagandists the perfect fodder with which to demonize the Spanish. The end result is the Filipinos’ negative perception of friars, a sentiment which can still be felt even in the modern era.

2. Only The Rich And Powerful Could Speak Spanish.

Spanish language in the Philippines

Contrary to popular belief, many Filipinos—including the masses—could actually speak and write in Spanish. After all, Spanish was a worldwide lingua franca for several hundred years, making it necessary for Filipinos to know the language.

And as we’ve already mentioned before, the introduction of the public school system which mandated free compulsory education for Filipinos made Spanish easily accessible. It is estimated that when the Americans arrived, at least 60 percent of the Filipino population wrote and spoke Spanish.

Ironically, Spanish-influenced Filipino literature flourished during the start of the American period as a result of greater freedom of the press. However, when the Americans arrived, they began phasing out Spanish in favor of the English language. Coupled with the propaganda which derided everything Spanish, the language soon slowly faded out of use among Filipinos.

3. Mother Spain Did Not Care About Or Ignored The Filipinos’ Plight.

filipinos during spanish colonization

To say that Spain, situated thousands of miles away from the Philippines, did not care about its colony at all is only one-half of the story. In truth, Spain’s government regularly kept itself appraised of any news in the archipelago.

Far from being uncaring, Spain regularly sent a number of decrees ordering for the better treatment of Filipinos. For example, King Philip II issued a decree as early as 1574 forbidding the abuse of native rowers and ordering their just compensation. Twenty years later, his successor Philip III also condemned the numerous abuses being heaped on the Filipinos.

Unfortunately, decrees and orders calling for the better treatment of Filipinos went unheeded or were outright ignored by the local Spanish. Also, while Spain knew of its colony’s situation, it was wracked with its own problems, including invasions, rebellions, and calls for reform of its own governmental system. To put that in perspective, both ruling country and colony experienced similar tumultuous events time and again.

4. All Spanish Officials Abused The Filipinos.

Governor General Carlos de la Torre

True, cases of corruption and abuse committed by Spanish officials in the Philippines are well-documented. Same as with the friars, however, not all Spanish officials abused their stations. In fact, two governor generals, Emilio Terrero and Carlos de la Torre, were well-loved by Filipinos due to their liberal views and implementation of popular reforms.

It was Terrero who protected Jose Rizal and resisted pressure from the friars to ban the dissemination of Noli Me Tangere in the Philippines. De La Torre, on other hand, opened the doors of the government for the masses, eased press restrictions, and allowed Filipinos to voice their concerns without fear of reprisal. For his efforts, the latter even received a spontaneous serenade by Filipino nationalists—an unprecedented show of thanks to a governor general.

Also, upper-class Filipinos and those mandated by the Spanish to govern the populace themselves were also guilty of abusing their fellow Filipinos. Specifically, those at the local level of government acted as a sort of middlemen for the Spanish who were usually content to overlook any abuse as long as they received their tribute and taxes.

5. Filipinos Had No Representation In The Spanish Cortes.

Spanish Cortes

Although we already know Filipino nationalists and reformists often protested the lack of representation in the Spanish Cortes (Parliament), little-known is the fact that the country actually sent two representatives to Spain in the early 1810s.

At the time, Napoleon and the French occupied most of Spain and imprisoned King Ferdinand VII. However, a Spanish government-in-exile composed mostly of liberals operated in the city of Cadiz where they promulgated the Cadiz Constitution in 1812. The Constitution provided for unheard-of freedoms and provided Spanish citizenship for people who lived in the colonies. It also allowed the colonies to field representatives to the Spanish legislature.

The first Filipino representative, a peninsulares named Don Pedro Perez de Tagle, represented the archipelago in 1809 while his successor, an insulares named Ventura de los Reyes filled the post in 1811. During his term, de los Reyes earned a reputation as a fierce defender of Filipino rights. Unfortunately, King Ferdinand VII—upon his return to the throne after Napoleon’s forces were driven out of Spain—caved in to the conservatives and had the Cadiz Constitution repealed. Incidentally, this would foreshadow Spain’s own internal struggles for reform just like that of its colony.

6. Spanish Rule Was Unified.

Spanish friars in the Philippines

To presume that the Spanish ruled the Philippines like a giant, united monolith would be an oversimplification. The truth is, the Spanish themselves were divided into differing factions looking for ways to undermine each other.

For example, friars often liked to report the abuses committed by the encomenderos, so much so that the encomienda system was largely replaced by administrative provinces by the end of the 17th century. Another good illustration would be the constant power struggle between friars and government officials. Both sides—either in good or bad faith—often kept monitoring each other for any misdeeds or goof-ups.

An even more pronounced rivalry involved the insulares (full-blooded Spanish born in the Philippines) and the peninsulares (full-blooded Spanish born in Spain). Tensions between the two classes ran high especially with the influx of the latter into the archipelago during the late 1800s.

The insulares—having established themselves at the top of the social hierarchy in the Philippines—resented the arrival of the peninsulares who thought of themselves as the superior class. As a result, both classes often fought for almost anything from government posts to commercial ventures.

7. There Were No Checks On Spanish Abuses.

juicio de residencia

With all the abuses committed by the Spanish, one may think there was no justice at all for the Filipinos. However, the natives did get some form of protection in the guise of thevisitador-general and juicio de residencia (trial of residence).

The first, visitador-general, was essentially a royally appointed investigator tasked to secretly scrutinize the governor general and other public officials for signs of abuse and corruption. Afterwards, he would then submit his report directly to the king. Unfortunately, visits by a visitador-general were infrequent owing to the great distance between Spain and the Philippines.

The second (and arguably the more effective) juicio de residencia involved requiring an outgoing governor general and other officials to undergo a trial at the end of their term and give a full account of their performance. Much like a truth commission, the official’s actions were subjected to intense review, a process which would sometimes last for half a year. If found guilty of wrongdoing, he could be penalized with a stiff fine, imprisonment, or a combination of both.

Ironically, the residencia system was abolished after the 1812 Cadiz Constitution came into effect and even after the same was repealed—a fact lamented by Jose Rizal in his “The Philippines A Century Hence.”

Pope to canonize Junipero Serra during September US visit
January 16, 2015 12:51am
ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE – Pope Francis said on Thursday that during his trip to the United States in September he would canonize Junipero Serra, a missionary who brought Christianity to the west of the United States in the 1700s.
“In September, God willing, I will canonise Junipero Serra in the United States, who was the evangelizer of the west of the United States,” he told reporters aboard the plane taking him from Sri Lanka to Manila on the second leg of his Asian tour.

Francis is due to visit Philadelphia for a world gathering of Catholic families. While Philadelphia is the only official stop on the tour so far, he is widely expected to visit New York to address the United Nations and Washington to meet President Barrack Obama.

Holding the canonization ceremony in the United States opens up the possibility he might visit the western part of the country where Serra worked as a missionary.

Serra, who was born on the Spanish island of Majorca in 1713, went to the Americas in the middle of the 18th century and led one of the first Franciscan missions in California.

He arrived in San Diego in 1769 and spent most of the rest of his life there before dying at a mission in Carmel near Monterey in 1784.

The Pope said since Serra has for centuries been considered a holy man, he had waved Church rules that require a second miracle to be attributed to the candidate for sainthood after his beatification.

He said Serra was “a great evangelizer”.   Reuters

THE POPE AS ‘HOLY FATHER’ By Harold Francis Benedict

Ok guys “holy father”… I suggest copy paste na lang

Holy Father

Only God is holy by his very essence; however, by a person, place, or thing’s association with God, it too can be called holy. To be called holy is to express the idea of consecration, that someone or something belongs to God. That is why the Bible can call many persons, places, and things holy.

In Genesis 28:16, the place God appears is “holy.” In Exodus 19:6, God tells the Israelites through Moses, “and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.” God’s dwelling place in the Tabernacle is “holy” (Ex 28:43), as is the city of Jerusalem (Is 48:2). Even a goat, the victim of sacrifice to God, is called “holy” in Leviticus 10:17.

After Christ’s death and resurrection the Christians called themselves and each other “holy ones” or “saints,” called by God to be his (Rom 1:7). In 1 Peter 1:16 we read, “it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’”

Since we are his holy people, and his people are the Church, it is fitting that the head of his holy people be called Holy Father—not because of his own merit, but because Christ died for him and for the Church that he leads on earth.
