The Church has never espoused polygenism which teaches the possibility that mankind did not descend from one single pair but from a group of men who were first created. This teaching is contrary to the explicit teaching of the Bible “And has made of ONE, all mankind, to dwell upon the whole face of the earth, determining appointed times and the limits of their habitation” (Acts 17:26) and also contrary to the correlative dogma of original sin as St Paul declares: “Wherefore as by ONE MAN sin entered into this world and by sin death: and so death passed upon all men, in whom all have sinned” (Romans 5:12). Although this question of origin is still debated in scientific circles but as far as the Church, and for that matter we as Catholics, is concerned this question is already settled and no longer subject to debate by theologians.
