The Venerable Servant of God Pope Paul VI, the Prophet of Life and the one who promulgated all the Decrees of the Second Vatican Council
Thank you father! I’m doing my own research now, just as what you and Mike told me to do. My position is that I want to stay in full communion with the pope until i die, and not just some bishop. I have seen cardinals saying VII is not binding and cardinals who say it is. Between the 2 groups, I’d rather believe those who have the same spirit as that of the pope’s. I’ve read an article of the Pope (not sure who among John Paul II, Benedict VI or Francis I) who described VII as a wonderful work of the Spirit. Therefore, i believe him… and all those bishops/cardinals who express the same sentiment. As far as I know, the Catholic Church, from peter until francis, has been a church with a pope who are in full communion with each other, and not a church with just a certain bishops who do not agree with the pope. There can be no church more traditional than a church having a pope by your side. We are the real traditional catholics. Therefore, father, what i am doing now is looking for a pope, from the conciliar popes (John XXIII and Paul VI) to the post conciliar popes (JP I and II, Benedict VI, and Francis I) who is against the VII or at least say things that agree with the statements of Mike. In doing so, i will be ahead of him. So far i’ve seen none. But there is poster who shared in Catholic Answers forum that “seemingly” agrees with him. So before I send your reply to him, I want to be sure that this post that i found is not contradictory to what you said or to my understanding. In that post, the pope, himself, (although I’m not sure if the quotations are authentic) who closed Vatican II explicitly mentioned the following in bracket:
[1) "Differing from other councils, this one was not directly dogmatic, but disciplinary and pastoral." - Pope Paul VI, General Audience of August 6, 1975, To the rectors of the Universities of the Society of Jesus
2) "Today we are concluding the Second Vatican Council...But one thing must be noted here, namely, that the teaching authority of the Church, even though not wishing to issue extraordinary dogmatic pronouncements..." - Pope Paul VI, Address of the last general meeting of the Council, Dec. 7, 1965
3) "There are those who ask what authority, what theological qualification, the Council intended to give its teachings, knowing that it avoided issuing solemn dogmatic definitions backed by the church's infallible teaching authority. The answer is known by those who remember the conciliar declaration of March 6, 1964. In view of the pastoral nature of the Council, it avoided proclaiming in any extraordinary manner any dogmas carrying the mark of infallibility." - Pope Paul VI, General Audience of Dec. 1, 1966
4) "Taking into account conciliar practice and the pastoral purpose of the present council, the sacred synod defined as binding on the Church only those matters of faith and morals which it has expressly put forward as such." - Addendum of Nov. 16, 1964 (alluded to by Paul VI above in quote #3) in the Explanatory Note to Lumen Gentium. ]
Father, are these authentic? i’m trying to find their context in the net to have a clearer picture, that is if theses were authentic, but I couldn’t find one. Especially the second quote which seems purposely cut.
DEAR GRACE I PRAISE AND THANK THE LORD FOR GIVING YOU THE ‘GRACE’ TO BE FAITHFUL TO THE POPE RATHER THAN TO SOME TREACHEROUS BISHOPS..
REGARDING THE QUOTES YOU’VE BRACKETED LET ME CHECK ON THEM ONE BY ONE:
[1) "Differing from other councils, this one was not directly dogmatic, but disciplinary and pastoral." - Pope Paul VI, General Audience of August 6, 1975, To the rectors of the Universities of the Society of Jesus]
READ CAREFULLY GRACE.
THE POPE SIMPLY STATED THAT VATICAN II IS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER COUNCILS. WHY? BECAUSE IT IS UNIQUE. EACH COUNCIL IS UNIQUE AND DIFFERENT FROM EACH OTHER. THERE WERE COUNCILS WHICH WAS CALLED BY EMPERORS NOT BY THE POPE.
THE POPE MERELY STATED THAT VATICAN II IS NOT DIRECTLY DOGMATIC. MEANING IT DIDN’T PRONOUNCE NEW DOGMA BUT IT IS STILL DOGMATIC NONETHELESS BECAUSE IT PRODUCED TWO DOGMATIC CONSTITUTIONS: DOGMATIC CONSTITUTION ON THE CHURCH AND DOGMATIC CONSTITUTION ON DIVINE REVELATION.
NOW GRACE, YOU ARE A VERY INTELLIGENT LADY. ARE PROMULGATED CONSTITUTIONS NOT BINDING TO ALL THE MEMBERS OF THAT ORGANIZATION?
IT IS PATHETIC TO USE THE QUOTES FROM POPE PAUL VI AGAINST VATICAN II BECAUSE HE IS THE ONE WHO CONCLUDED AND IMPLEMENTED IT. THE FACT THAT THE MASSES ARE IN VERNACULAR ALL OVER THE WORLD SHOWS THAT THE CHURCH OBEYED THE POPE IN IMPLEMENTING VATICAN II.
[2) "Today we are concluding the Second Vatican Council...But one thing must be noted here, namely, that the teaching authority of the Church, even though not wishing to issue extraordinary dogmatic pronouncements..." - Pope Paul VI, Address of the last general meeting of the Council, Dec. 7, 1965]
THIS ONE IS VERY SIMPLE GRACE. THE VATICAN II DIDN’T ISSUE EXTRAORDINARY DOGMATIC PRONOUNCEMENTS BUT THEY ISSUED ORDINARY DOGMATIC PRONOUNCEMENTS SUCH AS ISSUING TWO DOGMATIC CONSTITUTIONS.
[3) "There are those who ask what authority, what theological qualification, the Council intended to give its teachings, knowing that it avoided issuing solemn dogmatic definitions backed by the church's infallible teaching authority. The answer is known by those who remember the conciliar declaration of March 6, 1964. In view of the pastoral nature of the Council, it avoided proclaiming in any extraordinary manner any dogmas carrying the mark of infallibility." - Pope Paul VI, General Audience of Dec. 1, 1966]
IT IS THE SAME. THE COUNCIL DIDN’T ISSUE NEW DOGMATIC PRONOUNCEMENTS BUT IT ISSUED TWO DOGMATIC CONSTITUTIONS. THERE IS NO LAW IN THE CHURCH THAT THE ECUMENICAL COUNCIL IS NECESSITATED TO DEFINE NEW DOGMAS. NO NO NO… NADA, NUNCA, NIENTE… NEVER, NOTHING. IN RUSSIAN: NYET NYET.
[4) "Taking into account conciliar practice and the pastoral purpose of the present council, the sacred synod defined as binding on the Church only those matters of faith and morals which it has expressly put forward as such." - Addendum of Nov. 16, 1964 (alluded to by Paul VI above in quote #3) in the Explanatory Note to Lumen Gentium. ]
THERE IS NO DENIAL THAT THE VATICAN II IS A PASTORAL COUNCIL. ALL COUNCILS ARE PASTORAL. THE POPE DIDN’T SAY THAT TRENT IS NOT PASTORAL OR THAT THE LATERAN COUNCIL IS NOT PASTORAL. ALL OF THEM ARE PASTORAL INCLUDING VATICAN II.
THE POPE DIDN’T SAY IN ANY OF THESE QUOTES THAT VATICAN II IS NOT DOGMATIC.
THE POPE STATED THAT ONLY THOSE WHO ARE BINDING THE THINGS THAT THE COUNCIL HAVE DECLARED AS BINDING AS SUCH. WELL, ALL THE DOCUMENTS OF VATICAN II HAVE BEEN APPROVED AND ALL OF THEM WERE SIGNED AND PROMULGATED OF THE POPE SO THEY ARE ALL BINDING. IF ONE DOCUMENT WAS NOT APPROVED AND WAS NOT PROMULGATED BY THE POPE THEN IT WAS NOT BINDING.
IT IS THE POPE THAT DECIDES WHICH IS BINDING OR NOT BINDING BECAUSE HE IS THE BEARER OF THE KEYS OF HEAVEN GIVEN TO ST. PETER AND HIS SUCCESSOR… NOT LEFEBVRE AND NOT FELLAY. THE POPE AND THE POPE ALONE.
THE POPES ALL 6 OF THEM SO FAR, ALL UPHELD THE VATICAN II AS THE 21ST ECUMENICAL COUNCIL OF THE CHURCH. THE SAME POPES PROMULGATED ITS DOCUMENTS AND IMPLENTED THEM TO THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH. NO MORE NO LESS. NO DEMONS, NO HUMAN BEINGS WHETHER SSPX OR PROTESTANT OR ANY ONE CAN LOOSE WHAT THE POPE HAD BOUND BECAUSE IT IS BOUND ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN. NO MORE NO LESS.
HAVING EXPLAINED THE ABOVE QUOTES LET ME CITE THE OTHER QUOTES OF THE POPES ON VATICAN II:
THIS IS FROM ST. POPE JOHN XXIII DURING THE OPENING OF THE COUNCIL. SAYING THAT THE TRUTH OF THE FAITH IS THE SAME WHAT CHANGES IS THE FORM IT IS BEING PRESENTED OR INTRODUCED INTO THE NEW WORLD. MEANING THE FAITH DOES NOT CHANGE WHAT WE NEED TO CHANGE ARE THE WAY THEY ARE TO BE EXPLAINED TO PEOPLE.
“…the Church should never depart from the sacred treasure of truth inherited from the Fathers. But at the same time she must ever look to the present, to the new conditions and the new forms of life introduced into the modern world.” [ST. JOHN XXIII from his Opening Speech to the Second Vatican Council in St Peter's, Vatican, 11 October 1962]
FROM OUR BELOVED ST. POPE JOHN PAUL THE GREAT:
“What a treasure there is, dear brothers and sisters, in the guidelines offered to us by the Second Vatican Council….. a sure compass by which to take our bearings in the century now beginning.”
“Vatican II … is a sure compass by which to take our bearings in the century now beginning.” [ST. JOHN PAUL THE GREAT from Novo Millennio Ineunte, n.57 2001, CTS]
IMAGINE THAT GRACE. THE VATICAN II ACCORDING TO OUR BELOVED ST. JOHN PAUL THE GREAT IS OUR COMPASS. A SURE COMPASS. THAT IS WHY THE SSPX LOST THE WAY BECAUSE THEY REJECTED THE COMPASS GIVEN BY THE CHURCH UNDER THE KEYS OF ST. PETER.
NOW THIS IS FROM VEN. SERVANT OF GOD POPE PAUL VI:
“Whatever were our opinions about the Council’s various doctrines before its conclusions were promulgated, today our adherence to the decisions of the Council must be wholehearted and without reserve;…The Council was something very new: not all were prepared to understand and accept it. But now the conciliar doctrines must be seen as belonging to the magisterium of the Church and, indeed be attributed to the breath of the Holy Spirit.” [VEN. POPE PAUL VI, Pope Paul VI Address to the Curia, Rome, 23 April 1966 demonstrates the high import which he assigned to the Council. Quoted in ‘A Concise Guide to the Documents of the Second Vatican Council, Vol. One, Adrian Hastings. DLT 1968.]
SEE, THE CONCILIAR DOCTRINES ARE NOW PART OF THE MAGISTERIUM. ONLY IDIOTS WILL CLAIM THAT THE MAGISTERIAL TEACHINGS ARE NOT BINDING. THEN WE BELIEVE THAT THESE CONCILIAR TEACHINGS SINCE THEY ARE MAGISTERIAL THEY ARE ATTRIBUTED TO THE BREATH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.
NOW LISTEN TO HOW OUR BELOVED POPE BENEDICT XVI ECHOED THE WORDS OF HIS PREDECESSORS POPE JOHN XIII AND POPE PAUL VI ON VATICAN II:
“These Gospel parables express the dynamic of fidelity required in the Lord’s service; and through them it becomes clear that, as in a Council, the dynamic and fidelity must converge.
The hermeneutic of discontinuity is countered by the hermeneutic of reform, as it was presented first by Pope John XXIII in his Speech inaugurating the Council on 11 October 1962 and later by Pope Paul VI in his Discourse for the Council’s conclusion on 7 December 1965.
Here I shall cite only John XXIII’s well-known words, which unequivocally express this hermeneutic when he says that the Council wishes “to transmit the doctrine, pure and integral, without any attenuation or distortion”. And he continues: “Our duty is not only to guard this precious treasure, as if we were concerned only with antiquity, but to dedicate ourselves with an earnest will and without fear to that work which our era demands of us…”. It is necessary that “adherence to all the teaching of the Church in its entirety and preciseness…” be presented in “faithful and perfect conformity to the authentic doctrine, which, however, should be studied and expounded through the methods of research and through the literary forms of modern thought. The substance of the ancient doctrine of the deposit of faith is one thing, and the way in which it is presented is another…”, retaining the same meaning and message (The Documents of Vatican II, Walter M. Abbott, S.J., p. 715).
It is clear that this commitment to expressing a specific truth in a new way demands new thinking on this truth and a new and vital relationship with it; it is also clear that new words can only develop if they come from an informed understanding of the truth expressed, and on the other hand, that a reflection on faith also requires that this faith be lived. In this regard, the programme that Pope John XXIII proposed was extremely demanding, indeed, just as the synthesis of fidelity and dynamic is demanding.
However, wherever this interpretation guided the implementation of the Council, new life developed and new fruit ripened. Forty years after the Council, we can show that the positive is far greater and livelier than it appeared to be in the turbulent years around 1968. Today, we see that although the good seed developed slowly, it is nonetheless growing; and our deep gratitude for the work done by the Council is likewise growing.
In his Discourse closing the Council, Paul VI pointed out a further specific reason why a hermeneutic of discontinuity can seem convincing.
In the great dispute about man which marks the modern epoch, the Council had to focus in particular on the theme of anthropology. It had to question the relationship between the Church and her faith on the one hand, and man and the contemporary world on the other (cf. ibid.). The question becomes even clearer if, instead of the generic term “contemporary world”, we opt for another that is more precise: the Council had to determine in a new way the relationship between the Church and the modern era.” [POPE BENEDICT XVI, Christmas Address to the Roman Curia, Thursday December 22, 2005]

THIS IS THE HOMILY OF POPE FRANCIS ABOUT THE SECOND VATICAN COUNCIL:
We want to tame the Holy Spirit. And that is wrong. Because He is God, and He is the wind that comes and goes and you do not know where. He is the power of God, what gives us consolation and strength to move forward. But move forward! And this bothers you. Comfort is more beautiful…
[It seems] we are all content [in the presence of the Holy Spirit]. It is not true. This temptation is still [present] today. Just one example: we think the Council. The Council was a beautiful work of the Holy Spirit. Think of Pope John: he seemed a good pastor, and he was obedient to the Holy Spirit, and he did that. But after 50 years, have we done everything that the Holy Spirit said to us in the Council? In the continuity of the growth of the Church which was the Council?
No, we celebrate this anniversary, we make a monument, but that does not bother us. We do not want to change. What is more: there are voices that want to go back. This is called being stubborn, this is called wanting to tame the Holy Spirit, this is called becoming fools and slow of heart. [POPE FRANCIS. https://www.catholicculture.or...]
SEE, MIKE IS ONE OF THOSE WHO WANT TO GO BACK AND REFUSES THE GRACE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT GIVEN TO US THROUGH THE COUNCIL. DON’T JOIN THEM GRACE.
FINALLY GRACE, I WANT TO GIVE YOU THE ENDING OF THE LUMEN GENTION WHICH IS THE DOGMATIC CONSTITUTION ON THE CHURCH PROMULGATED BY VEN. POPE PAUL VI:
“Each and all these items which are set forth in this DOGMATIC CONSTITUTION have met with the approval of the Council Fathers. And We by the apostolic power given Us by Christ together with the Venerable Fathers in the Holy Spirit, approve, decree and establish it and command that what has thus been decided in the Council be promulgated for the glory of God.
Given in Rome at St. Peter’s on November 21, 1964.”
ONLY FOOLS WILL CLAIM THAT SUCH DECLARATION IS NON BINDING AND NON-DOGMATIC. THEN HERE IS THE OPENING FIRST AND SECOND PARAGRAPH OF POPE PAUL VI’S SPEECH FOR THE CLOSING OF THE SECOND VATICAN COUNCIL:
“Today we are concluding the Second Vatican Council. We bring it to a close at the fullness of its efficiency: the presence of so many of you here clearly demonstrates it; the well-ordered pattern of this assembly bears testimony to it; the normal conclusion of the work done by the council confirms it; the harmony of sentiments and decisions proclaims it. And if quite a few questions raised during the course of the council itself still await appropriate answers, this shows that its labors are now coming to a close not out of weariness, but in a state of vitality which this universal synod has awakened. In the post-conciliar period this vitality will apply, God willing, its generous and well-regulated energies to the study of such questions.
This council bequeaths to history an image of the Catholic Church symbolized by this hall, filled, as it is, with shepherds of souls PROFESSING THE SAME FAITH, breathing the same charity, associated in the same communion of prayer, discipline and activity and—what is marvelous—all desiring one thing: namely, to offer themselves like Christ, our Master and Lord, for the life of the Church and for the salvation of the world. This council hands over to posterity not only the image of the Church but also THE PATRIMONY OF HER DOCTRINE AND COMMANDMENTS, THE “DEPOSIT” RECEIVED FROM CHRIST and meditated upon through centuries, lived and expressed now and clarified in so many of its parts, settled and arranged in its integrity. The deposit, that is, which lives on by the divine power of truth and of grace which constitutes it, and is, therefore, able to vivify anyone who receives it and nourishes with it his own human existence.” [VEN. POPE PAUL VI, Address at the Closing of the Council, December 7, 1965]
IN SECOND PARAGRAPH, POPE PAUL VI CATEGORICALLY SAID THAT THE FAITH OF THE CHURCH IS ONE AND THE SAME. THE DEPOSIT OF THE FAITH IS PRESERVED. THE DEPOSIT OF THE FAITH WHICH IS THE SAME AND UNCHANGED IS ACTUALLY BEING PRESENTED TO THE MODERN WORLD WITH VIGOR AND VITALITY THROUGH THE COUNCIL. SEE FOR YOURSELF GRACE.
