COMMENTARY on Catechism of Trent, Article IV, “Circumstances Of Christ’s Burial” says:
“Burial, Passion, and also death, apply to Christ Jesus not as God but as man. To suffer and die are INCIDENTAL TO HUMAN NATURE ONLY;
yet they are ALSO attributed to God, since, as is clear, they are PREDICATED with propriety of that Person who is at once perfect God and perfect man.”
COMMENTARY:
- “To suffer and die are incidental to human nature only”.
The direct object here is “human nature.” This manner of saying is similar to “only the human nature died.” By saying this, the catechism of Trent does not deny that death is predicated to the Person. Our point here is the statement “only the human nature died” is a correct rendering. It is an accepted theological idiom in catholic language.
An “idiom” is not entirely the same with “idiomatic expressions.” An idiom is a peculiar manner of speaking, which usually doesn’t follow the standard rules of grammar but is used or acceptable in a specific field or discipline because of convention or by technical coinage. That is why we can speak of medical idiom, legal idiom, theological idiom, etc. Scholastic philosophy is full of peculiar idioms or technical words. That is why Fr. Serpa, OP, Bishop Louise Morrow, St. Thomas Aquinas have no problem in this rendering. If we review older manuals in dogmatic theology, we will also see the same renderings. No one should speak highly of his knowledge of theology if he has not mastered the idiom of scholastic philosophy.
- “Yet they are ALSO attributed to God [Person].”
The use of “ALSO” here indicates that “suffer” and “death” are first predicated to the human nature and yet ALSO (secondarily) to the Person/God. That is why as I have explained before, both nature and person/suppositum are terminus of attribution/predication. The nature is the terminus ad quem while the suppositum is the terminus a quo of attribution. To say that we can’t attribute or predicate to nature is the most hilarious thing i’ve heard in scholastic philosophy and dogmatic theology.
That is why if you read manuals in dogmatic theology, there is always a subsection entitled “The Attributes of the Divine Nature” and also a subsection on “The Attributes of the Human Nature of Christ.”
Thus, Ludwig Ott have this subtitle: “Christ’s Human Nature was Passible, De Fide.” The direct object here is the “human nature.” “Christ” is only a modifier. I’m sure Fr. Abe and minions will object in this way: “But Ott said “Christ’s Human Nature…” not “The Human Nature…”” But this is a malicious attempt to cloud the discussion. A desperate and dishonest self-deception by forcing ones mind to stop thinking or to stop only at what one wants to hear. When we say “The human nature died”, we are not speaking about any other nature but of Christ. When the catechism of Trent said “to suffer and die are incidental to human nature only,” it speaks of no other nature but Christ’s. Fr. Abe will be willing to say that the Catechism is speaking of Christ’s human nature but he will not grant that to me. The way he argue, therefore, is similar in malice
to how protestants argue when they accuse us that our statues and images are really idols because “we are really worshipping them” when in fact we are not. Fr. Abe is so willing to do this because he is overcame by hatred because I have proven to himself his heretical opinion.
Thus, we can say “the divine nature cant die” as well as “the Person cant die.” We can say “the human nature can die/passible” as well say “the Person can die (in his human nature).” We can say “the body is weak” as well say “the person is weak; “the spirit is willing” as well say “the person is willing;” “the mouth can speak” as well say “the person can speak,” etc. Whatever is an attribute of a nature and its parts are also attributed to the suppositum/hypostasis/person. In fact, the only reason why we can attribute anything to the person is because it is an attribute/property of its nature.
- Concerning the naive objection perpetuated by our brothers, viz, that natures can’t die because it is abstract. Here’s the simple response:
Regarding the statement that nature is an essence, this is correct. By this, they mean it is abstract since “essence” is “nature” formally considered. However, it also indicates their insufficient knowledge of metaphysics and logic and their idioms. In metaphysics, the word “nature” can be construed in two ways: 1) concretely and 2) abstractly. It is also called in logic as first intention vs second intention. When some of our brothers say nature is abstract, they view it in the second intention. But the word nature is also used in the first intention or concretely. For instance, when we say human nature, sometimes we refer to the concrete body and its weaknesses and the attributes or properties of its parts or constituents. Or we can also say human nature is mortal, capable of suffering and death. When Aquinas said that “it was human nature that died,” when Bishop L. Morrow and Fr. Serpa said “only the human nature died,” they obviously used the word “human nature” in the first intention.
Unfortunately, Fr. Abe and his minions (mostly CFD from Davao) are bent on showing that there is a heresy in my explanations. They are so desperate to do this at all cost even at the cost of twisting the truth, using their influence to control others, blocking me, etc. They are doing these because I have proven their heresies and we have witnesses for this. We actually have witnesses that they changed their opinions. Before, for them, the statement “God died in his human nature” is heretical. That is why they all called me a heretic because I have firmly defended this formula against them.
