ST. PETER PREACHING THE FAITH to Jews and Gentiles on Pentecost

Brothers and sisters our efforts to defend our faith with all our hearts to our schismatic born again bretheren is tiring and with all due honesty seems hopeless. They have made up their minds as anti-catholics and its draining my energy to show them biblical and early fathers truth. If we believe theyre christians and have the opportunity to be saved even with the false sola fide doctrine then why do we even bother trying our best to give them veritas which they will still wholeheartedly deny?

RESPONSE:

Marwil Nacor Llasos

Apologetics is not our work. It is God’s. Truth is like a lion. The apologist’s job is to let the lion out.
Ramon Gitamondoc
I like the comment of Atty Marwil that apologetics is not our work but God’s. I think there is a lot of insight here which will shed light on the predicament raised by Hernando Sison. It is during those times when we think that doing apologetics is “our own crusade” that we feel discouraged when we feel that our efforts has been fruitless. We might be tempted to believe that the force of argument is all that is needed to convert people but it is not. We have to realize that apologetics which is the explanation and defense of the faith with the view to attract people to the faith and strengthen those who already possess the faith is first of all the work of God. So in the last analysis, after we have done our part, we leave everything to God and pray for more graces on those people whom we wish to convert.

I would like to share an experience of mine. During my younger years as Catholic Faith Defender I frequently go the plaza to engage in debates with anti-Catholics. Sometimes our debate will bring us to the wee hours of the night and to the early hours of the morning of the following day. I have done this for months and years and I haven’t convince a single adversary to embrace the Catholic faith. Then work and married life has prevented me from going to the plaza for years until one day I decided to visit the place again just to see what has been happening after my long absence. To my surprise, one of my former adversary called my attention coz I did not recognize him at once and he was already wearing the Franciscan vestment. He told me that he left the Jesus Miracle Crusade and has returned to the Catholic Church and has decided to join the Franciscans. During his narration I was still in disbelief at his remarkable conversion. He told me that while he used to debate me with all his might and was hell-bent in defending his position he also confessed that when he was alone and far from the plaza he started to analyze and realize the force of the arguments for Catholicism. In prayer and in silence he felt that a silent voice is calling and urging him to come back to the Catholic Church.

John Stephen Manalo Cervantes
It is our duty not only to defend but also to convince little by little. To not defend the truth when the truth is being forcefully put out or attacked would result to the sin of ommision.
Simon Jake Beringuela
it’s the work of the Holy Spirit to change the heart of people. Ours are to plant seeds to their heart. It might be frustrating to know that they are having a hard time accepting the fullness of truth.. but keeping in mind the fact we are not in control in changing people’s heart would help to ease such frustration. We can only control ourselves, our attitude.
