“She was stunned. She was disappointed. She was shocked,” Gerald Simmons, King’s nephew, told WALB. Simmons explained that his aunt was unable to make it to church for a number of months because of an illness that left her a “shut-in.” As for financial support, he says his aunt has gone above and beyond in the past when giving to the church.
“You shouldn’t chase the individuals down,” said Simmons. “You shouldn’t do that. If that’s the case, you’re money hungry.” He says that his aunt is not the first to receive such a letter from the church, and hopes that sharing her story will effect a change in policy.
“You have to have money to make these churches run, but it’s not about money,” Simmons said. “It’s about God. You have to put God first.”
Unfortunately, the pursuit of money seems to be commonplace in churches today. In July, we reported that a Florida church sent a single mom a $1,000 “delinquency notice” because she failed to contribute $50 a month for herself an5 $5 a month for her daughter, as well as other fees (including a $250 gift to the church on its anniversary).
There is no excuse for “pay-to-pray” schemes. After all, 2 Peter 2:1-3 reads:
“But there were also false prophets in Israel, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will cleverly teach destructive heresies and even deny the Master who bought them. In this way, they will bring sudden destruction on themselves. Many will follow their evil teaching and shameful immorality. And because of these teachers, the way of truth will be slandered. In their greed they will make up clever lies to get hold of your money. But God condemned them long ago, and their destruction will not be delayed.”
Churches, for the most part, enjoy tax-exempt status. However, if a house of worship chooses to operate as a business — including charging members fees for the pleasure of being there — it might just be time to reexamine allowing religious institutions to avoid contributing to society.
