The Sacred Host – The Body of Christ

The Splendor of the Church

And if his oblation be a sacrifice of peace offerings, and he will offer of the herd, whether male or female: he shall offer them without blemish before the Lord.]

Lev 3:3 et offerent de HOSTIA pacificorum in oblationem Domini adipem qui operit vitalia et quicquid pinguedinis intrinsecus est [And they shall offer of the sacrifice of peace offerings, for an oblation to the Lord: the fat that covereth the entrails, and all the fat that is within]

Lev 3:6 si vero de ovibus fuerit eius oblatio et pacificorum HOSTIA sive masculum sive feminam obtulerit inmaculata erunt [ But if his oblation and the sacrifice of peace offering be of the flock, whether he offer male or female, they shall be without blemish.]

Lev 3:9 et offerent de pacificorum HOSTIA sacrificium Domino adipem et caudam totam [Lev 3:9 And they shall offer of the victim of peace offerings, a sacrifice to the Lord: the fat and the whole rump]

For the victim that is slain for sin, the blood of which is carried into the tabernacle of the testimony to make atonement in the sanctuary, shall not be eaten, but shall be burnt with fire.]

As THE SACRIFICE FOR SIN is offered, so is also that for a trespass: the same shall be the law of both these sacrifices. IT SHALL BELONG TO THE PRIEST THAT OFFERED IT.]

* Lev 7:13 panes quoque fermentatos cum HOSTIA gratiarum quae immolatur pro pacificis [Moreover loaves of leavened bread with THE SACRIFICE OF THANKS, which is offered for peace offerings]

He shall immolate the lamb, where the victim for sin is wont to be immolated, and the holocaust, that is, in the holy place. For as that which is for sin, so also the victim for a trespass offering pertaineth to the priest: it is holy of holies.]

But if there be no one to receive it, they shall give it to the Lord, and it shall be the priest’s, besides the ram that is offered for expiation, to be an atoning sacrifice.]

And he shall confirm the covenant with many, in one week: and in the half of the week the victim and the sacrifice shall fail: and there shall be in the temple the abomination of desolation: and the desolation shall continue even to the consummation, and to the end.]

Heb 10:26 voluntarie enim peccantibus nobis post acceptam notitiam veritatis iam non relinquitur pro peccatis HOSTIA [For if we sin wilfully after having the knowledge of the truth, there is now left no sacrifice for sins]

So Heliodorus, after he had offered a sacrifice to God, and made great vows to him, that had granted him life, and given thanks to Onias, taking his troops with him, returned to the king.]

Most of the verses refers to the SACRIFICIAL OFFERINGS in the Temple or before the Altar of God. It also refers to the Sacrifices for Sin and even to THE BREAD being offered for THANKSGIVING [1 Cor 11:23-24]. In the New Testament, the offering of Bread and Wine which becomes the Body and Blood of the Lord replaces the sacrifice of bulls, rams and bullocks. Thus, the Catholics offers the Eucharistic Sacrifice which is the Bread and Wine that turns into the Body and Blood of Jesus and so we refer to the Eucharistic Body of the Lord as The Sacrificial Victim [Hostia].
