CBCP social action arm sets up 1,600 houses for Yolanda survivors

November 1, 2014 8:25am
At least 1,600 houses in nine dioceses have been built with help from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines’ social arm National Secretariat for Social Action (NASSA).

NASSA executive secretary Fr. Edu Gariguez disclosed this less than two weeks before the first anniversary of super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan)’s battering of the Visayas in November 2013.

In an interview on Church-run Radio Veritas, Gariguez said some families have already moved into the houses.

“We are targeting more than 3,000 this year so more or less malaki na ang percentage, more than half na ang aming na-accomplished at mas bibilis pa ito kasi ang mahirap lang naman dyan sa simula but once you have your system in place tuluy-tuloy na yan,” he said.

Also, he said the NASSA aims to build 3,000 more houses before end-2014.

Meanwhile, he asked government to come out with figures on how many houses it has built so far.

“Sinasabi nila walang ginagawa ang Simbahan nakakatawa kasi sino ang nakakapag-deliver ng ganyang kalaking resulta? Ito ay mga permanent shelter hindi ito mga transitional lang na madaling gawin,” he said.
