The Ateneo Chamber Singers emerged champions at the Musica Sacra a capella Category of the 2014 World Choir Games, held from July 9 to 19 in Riga, Latvia. It was their first time to compete in what is known as the “Olympics for choirs.”

“There was, of course, a certain nervousness, but more than anything we were really excited to share our ‘Filipino sound’,” said ACS member Lester Tanquilut in an online interview with InterAksyon.com.

They sang “Crucifixus” by Antonio Lotti, “Wenn ein Starker Gewappneter” by Johannes Brahms, “Dulce Lumen” by Michael Waldenby, and “Nativitas” by John Pamintuan.

Through the guidance of conductor Jonathan Velasco, ACS also bagged a second gold, although they finished in second place following a group from Venezuela. For the Mixed Chamber Choirs category, they sang “Die Stimme des Kindes” by Jaako Matyjarvi, “Aba Po Santa Mariang Reyna” by Ryan Cayabyab, “Et Apertum est Templum” by Robin Estrada, and “Gapas” by Eudenice Palaruan.

“We were feeling so blessed the whole time to even experience it in the first place,” added Tanquilut.

ACS alumnus GP Eleria was part of the audience during the choir’s Musica Sacra a capella performance, and took the video above.
